Paul Scholes tells Manchester United's youngsters what they must do to be considered 'greats'

Former midfield ace Paul Scholes insists Manchester United's group of young players cannot be described as "greats" until they have ended the club's trophy drought.

United, who have a wealth of highly exciting talent on their books, have not won a trophy since triumphing in the Europa League in 2017.

Investing heavily in the squad in recent years, most recently in the likes of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, United boast a highly talented crop of players.

Players like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga and Sancho are still some way off being the finished article and so the future looks bright for United.

With that in mind, Scholes believes those sorts of players, despite their undoubted levels of talent and potential, cannot be considered "great players" until they have helped United win a trophy.

Asked when United can be considered as a top team once again, Scholes told BT Sport : "Not u ntil they start winning trophies again. Look, as a club it's the biggest club in the world I think and it needs to be winning trophies.

"They spend a lot of money year in, year out on players - we think the best players at times - but they haven’t produced.

"We thought this year was going to be a little bit different.

"We had some really good young players, but these young players everybody thinks are great players - they aren't yet. They aren't great players until they’ve won something.

"We keep talking about the potential to win something, the potential to prove it in big games - they haven't done that yet andthey have got to prove they can do that."
