Paul Scholes responds to reports Sir Jim Ratcliffe could axe Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes insists Erik ten Hag remains the right man for the job amid suggestions prospective investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe may appoint a new manager.

Ratcliffe, who is a lifelong United supporter, is close to securing a 25 per cent stake in the club. It has been reported elsewhere that, as part of the package, the INEOS chief will have a huge say in the club's football operations.

It has sparked suggestions that the 71-year-old will look to bring in a new manager, marking the beginning of a huge reset at Old Trafford. Former Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter has been touted as an option.

However, Scholes believes Ten Hag is still the right figure to lead the club forward. The Dutchman took charge in 2022 and has overseen gradual progress, though their start to this season has featured its fair share of uninspiring results.

"I think it's hard to say - I think he's been a very good coach so far, I like him," Scholes told TNT Sports. "He's been ruthless in a job that is incredibly difficult, he's essentially been thrown out to the lions in the sense of answering every single question thrown at him by the media and I think he's handled it really well.

"Has he put a team together that is good enough to challenge for the Premier League? No, but it looked like a good start towards the end of last season.

"We've come into the summer and the recruitment hasn't been there, it's not at the level of competing with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. There's still a lot of work to do, but he's the right man, whether Jim is coming in
