Paul Scholes makes gutting admission about Manchester United this season

Paul Scholes felt Manchester United weren't set up to beat Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

United needed to avoid defeat at Villa Park after a chaotic game against FC Porto in midweek and they managed to secure a point by delivering a disciplined performance.

There were few chances for both sides and the point left United in 14th position in the table. United have made a very disappointing start to the new campaign and pressure has mounted on Erik ten Hag, with the majority of fans now believing he should be sacked.

Scholes was on punditry duty for Premier League Productions at the weekend and he suggested Ten Hag didn't set United up to win the game against Villa due to needing a result.

"It's a point for United going to a tough ground under a lot of pressure. I never really felt like they were there to try and win the game," said a visibly deflated Scholes.

"It was more of a survival tactic than anything, but they were quite tough to play against I suppose and you have to take into account the midweek fixtures especially.

"Villa had a big win against Bayern Munich and struggled to live up to that today. For United to go away in Europe, it's difficult on a Thursday night and they had a tough game.

"I think the game probably reflects the midweek both clubs had. United were more difficult to play against today and more difficult to play through, which doesn't usually happen.
