Paul Scholes compares Frank Lampard decision to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United return

Paul Scholes has likened Frank Lampard's arrival as the new interim Chelsea manager to that of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United.

Chelsea confirmed the appointment of Lampard until the end of the season earlier this week, with the former midfielder coming in for a second stint in charge at Stamford Bridge after being sacked by Everton earlier this season. The Blues sacked Graham Potter after falling into the bottom half of the table, but remain in the Champions League with a quarter-final clash against Real Madrid on the horizon.

Solskjaer made a similar return in December 2018, taking over from Jose Mourinho in a caretaker role at United. The Norwegian was initially due to return to Molde at the end of the campaign, but 14 wins from 19 games saw him handed an offer for a permanent role.

And Scholes has likened the two situations, insisting that Lampard can also earn a permanent job with a string of positive performances.

"You can’t blame Frank, he’s got to take it. He’s in the Champions League quarter-finals," Scholes told BT Sport. "It was quite a similar situation here with Ole Gunnar, if you think. Ole Gunnar did have a lot more time, in his role, he had a lot more time to prove he can do it and by the end of the season they had no choice.

"There’s only what, 10 more league games? And Champions League to go but Frank is capable of doing it. One big positive for Frank is that they’ve got N’Golo Kante back, and if he keeps him fit he makes a huge difference to that team. If they somehow get goals out of Chelsea they’ve got a chance."
