Paul Scholes agrees with Ralf Rangnick over how Manchester United can allow Fred to prosper this campaign.

Despite being criticised at times throughout his Old Trafford career, Brazil international Fred has been a regular for every manager since signing for the club four years ago. During this summer window - which shuts tomorrow night at 11pm - United made their first move in central midfield since Fred by recruiting Casemiro from Real Madrid.

United initially wanted Declan Rice and, subsequently, turned their attention to Frenkie de Jong when Erik ten Hag was appointed as manager. However, there have been some well-documented stumbling blocks when it comes to that would-be pursuit and Casemiro, 30, has understandably taken centre stage following his £60million switch.

But what will that mean for compatriot Fred and Scott McTominay as the season develops?

Speaking about Fred in April this year, Rangnick told Sky Sports: "For me, he's an extremely valuable player, a team player in the true sense, a player who puts in every effort he has and would give his last drop of blood for the team.

"He's also a player who can score goals and has those surprising elements in his game, little flick-ons. He can also be a technical player, too."

Rangnick continued: "That combination makes him extremely valuable and to reduce him to only a number six or a defensive midfield player doesn't rate him highly enough. He can do a lot more than just defend."
