Paul O'Grady's poignant words as emotional fans 'disappointed' after final For the Love of Dogs on ITV

Paul O'Grady's unexpected poignant words left fans in tears as the last episode of For the Love of Dogs he filmed before his death aired. The much-loved comedian, also known for his drag queen persona Lily Savage, died ‘unexpectedly but peacefully’ on March 28 aged 67.

His partner Andre Portasio said at the time: "He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion." Paul and Andre had been together for 18 years and tied the knot in 2017. The couple lived in a farmhouse home in Kent, which also housed a variety of their rescue animals.

Following his death, the new, eleventh series of Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs began to air posthumously, however, it came come to an end on Thursday night (September 28), leaving fans heartbroken.

The episode began with a poignant statement from Paul as he opened the programme with a voiceover as viewers got to see some of the animals that were at that time residing at Battersea Cats and Dogs Home. "Life is full of its unknown twists and turns…" he said. "So it’s always best to expect the unexpected," he added.

The episode went on to show Paul with a 'wise guy’' bulldog, two adorable tiny kittens and the animal-lover overjoyed at a hostel scheme opening its doors to homeless people with their dogs. But watching one of his final TV appearances was a ‘bittersweet’ moment for viewers.

@JulieSmith2001 said: "Oh no, can’t believe it’s the last episode of #pogdogs tonight, I’m really going to miss Paul."
