Paul O'Donovan through to single scull final at European Championships

Paul O'Donovan secured his place in the Men's Single Scull A final at the European Rowing Championships in Hungary on Friday.

Competing in the heavyweight single sculls event for the first time, the world champion finished third in his initial heat on Thursday and went down the repechage route, competing for a spot in the A final.

O'Donovan dominated the repechage, hitting the front at the 1000m mark and he never relinquished the lead after that, beating his nearest rival Emil Neykov from Bulgaria, by almost five seconds.

The A final will start at 10.50am on Saturday morning and can be streamed live here.

Elsewhere Alison Bergin and Zoe Hyde progressed to the A final of the Women's Double Sculls after finishing runners-up in their heat.

Bergin and Hyde produced a blistering final 500m to finish ahead of the Swiss and Hungarian boats, taking the runners-up spot behind Lithuania to clinch the second automatic qualifying spot. Their final will be also raced on Sunday morning.
