Paul Merson believes if West Ham can replicate the form of Newcastle United they can seal a top-four spot this season.

The Hammers come up against the Magpies on Saturday afternoon and despite sitting 20 points and 12 places above their opponents it is Newcastle who going into the game as the form side.

With three successive wins and two draws in the last five league matches Eddie Howe has led his team out of the relegation zone and added a number of players to his squad during the January transfer window.

In contrast, West Ham did not make any moves in the transfer market and have taken seven points during the same five-game period that Newcastle picked up 11 in.

Merson told Sky Sports he has been impressed with Newcastle's recent form: "Credit where credit is due, winning three games on the trot is some going when you're virtually bottom of the league.

"If Arsenal did that, it's a result. If West Ham were to do that now, they've got every chance of playing Champions League football next year. The Premier League is hard, so to win three straight games is impressive."

One of the key players in Newcastle's resurgence is Kieran Trippier, however, Howe will be without his star defender for the clash with West Ham and for the foreseeable future after the England international broke a bone in his foot
