'Like Thierry Henry used to do' - Paul Merson stunned by what this Newcastle star did yesterday

Newcastle United secured yet another Premier League win after brushing past Brentford 2-0 to move further away from the drop zone.

Joelinton opened the scoring just after the half hour mark, with Joe Willock doubling the Magpies’ tally just before the break.

It was a solid win for Eddie Howe’s side who took advantage of Brentford playing the majority of the game with 10 men after Josh Dasilva saw red just 11 minutes into the tie.

Paul Merson on Sky Sports was full of praise for Willock and the way he took his goal, going on to say: “It was a great finish into the roof of the net. He opened himself up like Thierry Henry used to do.”

That’s certainly some high praise from Merson when you consider the level that Thierry Henry played at, who is undoubtedly a Premier League great. This was solidified when he was among the first chunk of players inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The upturn in form from Newcastle sees them way up in the form tables. TransferMarkt’s table from matchday 22 to 27 has Howe’s men second in the table for the period, with only Liverpool firing better.

Newcastle’s last six games have seen them pick up four wins and two draws, form that has helped them forge a bit of daylight between themselves and the drop.
