Paul Flynn's Tailteann Cup quarter-final predictions

The race for the Tailteann Cup will be whittle down to four teams this weekend and Paul Flynn casts his eye over the quarter-finals.

SATURDAY

Limerick v Laois, TUS Gaelic Grounds, 3pm

Limerick were poor against Wicklow in a game they didn’t need to win. The question is, was that the only reason for their under-performance? We can give them the benefit of the doubt, but Laois will look at Limerick’s form and take confidence from the fact that the Treaty’s wins were against Longford and Carlow.

They are teams Laois would fancy their chances against, and the O’Moore County looked strong against Fermanagh.

Verdict: Laois

Meath v Wexford, Pairc Tailteann, 4pm

Meath enter the game having care of Down last time out to top their group, while Wexford turned over Offay in the preliminary quarter-final, a really good win for the Model men. Given Offaly beat Meath in the Leinster championship, the form would suggest this is going to be a tight affair.

Meath’s evolution into a more a defensively sound outfit, a better balance in the squad and the gulf between Division Two and Four should tell.

Verdict: Meath

Cavan v Down, Kingspan Breffni, 5.15pm

Having hit Longford for 1-20, Down’s inconsistency in shooting against Meath shows a team that is learning. That is reflective in their performances. Cavan’s form in the competition has been flawless so far, and in the league meeting between the sides in March, Mickey Graham’s side had seven points to spare at Breffni Park, though two late goals may have flattered the scoreline somewhat.

Cavan look to have the most settled squad in the competition and have the experience of getting to last year’s final.
