Paris 2024: Rhasidat Adeleke pipped for a medal as she finishes fourth in 400m final

Rhasidat Adeleke has narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal as she finished fourth in the women's 400m final at Paris 2024.

The Tallaght sprinter, who finished in a time of 49.28 was pipped to the bronze medal by Poland’s Natalia Kazcmarek who beat her to gold in the European final in June.

Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic won gold and set a new Olympic record with a time of 48.17. She was chased home by Bahraini sprinter Salwa Eid Naser, with bronze taken by Poland’s European champion Natalia Kaczmarek.

Adeleke, who qualified for the final as the sixth fastest from Wednesday's semi-final heats, was seeking to become the first Irish athlete to win a track and field medal at the Olympics since Rob Heffernan did so retrospectively at London 2012.

On a rain-sodden track, the 21-year-old had moved into third coming into the final bend but was unable to hold on in the straight as Kazcmarek overtook her to clinch the final medal place.

Adeleke's time of 49.28 was slightly below her PB of 49.07.

After the race the Irish record holder confirmed she would be part of the Irish team for Saturday night's 4x400m relay final.
