Paris 2024: Kate O'Connor 22nd overall after heptathlon opener

Ireland's Kate O'Connor finished seventh in her 100m hurdles heat as the first event of the women's heptathlon got underway at the Stade de France on Thursday morning.

The heptathlon consists of seven events: 100m hurdles, 200m, 800m, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin.

The 100m hurdles and the high jump are the first two events in the programme on Thursday morning, with the shot put and 200m to come in the evening session.

Dundalk native O'Connor is the second ever Irish athlete to compete in the heptathon and the first since 1972.

Lining out in lane seven in the first of the three 100m hurdles heats, the 23-year-old finished seventh in a time of 14.08, accruing 967 points which leaves her 22nd overall in the standings.

Switzerland's Annik Kaelin leads the way on 1144 points.

O'Connor's second event will see her take on the high jump at 10.05am Irish time.
