Paris 2024: Irish in action on Day 16 of Olympic Games

The curtain comes down on Ireland's most successful ever Olympic Games on Sunday morning with two Irish competitors in action.

There will be another slice of history made when Fionnuala McCormack sets out on the marathon trail around the streets of Paris as the 39-year-old becomes the first Irish woman to compete in five successive Games.

The Wicklow woman’s journey has seen her race in Beijing in the 3000m steeplechase, at 5000m and 10,000m in London, and then in marathons in Rio (placed 20th) and Tokyo.

The coverage on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player starts at 6.55am and the event gets under way at 7am.

The last member of Team Ireland to go is Lara Gillespie, who races in the omnium, in which cyclists go in scratch, tempo, elimination and points races.

Gillespie was just pipped for bronze at this year's senior Europeans and won double gold at the Under-23 European Track Championships in 2023 in the omnium and points races.

The 23-year-old won two stages of the Giro Mediterraneo Rosa in Italy earlier this year and is currently riding for professional team UAE Team ADQ.

The Enniskerry woman starts her programme at 10am.

Medal-winning swimmers Daniel Wiffen and Mona McSharry will carry the Irish flag for the closing ceremony, which is due to include performances from Snoop Dog, Tom Cruise, Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
