Paris 2024: Finn Lynch progresses to medal race while Eve McMahon bows out

Ireland's Finn Lynch will take his place in the medal race in the Men's Dinghy tomorrow after low winds disrupted the day's sailing and forced the abandonment of the final two races.

Lynch had sat in 10th spot overnight following the conclusion of Race 8 on Sunday, with 10 sailors due to progress to the medal race on Tuesday.

It teed up a potentially nervy but exciting afternoon on the Marseille Marina on Monday but the weather intervened, with excessively calm conditions forcing the abandonment of both men's races.

Lynch thus progresses to the medal race but is a long way shy of the medal places, the sailor telling RTÉ Sport the best he could feasibly achieve tomorrow is an eighth place finish.

"Mixed emotions now. Bit disappointed I couldn't get a little bit higher. But happy to at least experience a medal race," Lynch told Darren Frehill on Drivetime on RTÉ Radio 1.

"I was right on the edge, one point inside the top-10. I was about 20 points outside the top five. I wanted two races but unfortunately, there was no wind on the bay in Marseille today.

"The best I can do is eighth unfortunately. A medal is off the table. I'm sailing for pride, I just want to put in a good performance, to give the people who supported me something to celebrate."

Meanwhile, Eve McMahon did get on the sea on Monday, putting in a hugely creditable display in Race 9 to finish in seventh spot overall.

This saw the 19-year old climb to 13th in the overall standings, with an outside chance of sneaking into the medal race.

However, with the boats lining up for the 10th and final race, the uncongenial weather forced its abandonment and though another time was initially scheduled, the organisers ultimately had to admit defeat.
