Parents say this is Greater Manchester's best park - so what makes it so special?

If there's one thing you can beat in the summer it's a good park.

Find the right place and it will keep your kids entertained for hours - something we all need with the six-week school holidays to fill. But there's one place that parents rave about more than anywhere and that's Haigh Woodland Park in Wigan.

Often referred to as 'the jewel in Wigan's crown', it encompasses 250 acres of park and woodland surrounding the historic Haigh Hall. Whether you have money to spend or not, you'll find something to do there.

The free adventure playground is among the highlights, with climbing, a treehouse and interactive play features. Families tell us they like it because there is something for all ages, with climbing frames and ropes to challenge the older ones, and smaller equipment such as swings and seesaws for younger ones.

Inside the woodland areas you'll often find families making dens and there are plenty of events on throughout the year, like the singalong cinema events and outdoor theatre happening this summer.

Here's what there is to do across the park

The Adventure Play zone is suitable for children ages three and over.

From mini zip wires to climbing frames, a rope bridge, large slides, seesaws, swings and even an electronic game to get your kids running around the 'hit' zones, Haigh Woodland Park's Adventure Play is packed with activities.

There's also a sandpit with a wooden climbing frame and sand diggers for little ones.

The Trim Trail is a new family friendly activity area for under 12s. You'll find a range of fun play equipment, including jump along logs, overhead parallel bars, rope runs and climbing frames.
