Pádraig Power loss the latest forward headache for Cork

Cork will have to plan without Pádraig Power for the rest of the season after it emerged that the forward suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the draw with Limerick.

The Blarney man had been forced off with a dislocated shoulder early into the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A clash last Saturday and was subsequently also diagnosed with the knee injury that will rule the 24-year-old out for the rest of the year.

Power saw brief action off the bench in last year's injury-disrupted championship campaign but had been named the GAA's Hurler of the Week after scoring 1-04 from play in the opening-round league win over Wexford.

"He did so well last year, when he was out for much of the year but battled his way back in and came on in the All-Ireland semi-final," manager Pat Ryan told The Echo.

"He was obviously hoping to kick on from that and we were hoping he would too. He was very good against Wexford and it's just a shame but the main thing is that he makes a full recovery.

"It’s a similar situation with [forward] Ben Cunningham, unfortunately he’s out for the best part of three months with a bad hamstring injury that he got playing for UCC last week. We felt it best to let him go back to the club and recuperate."

The duo's absence meaning Cork are now missing four attackers. Conor Lehane also dislocated his shoulder against Limerick and is expected to be out for six weeks while fellow veteran forward Seamus Harnedy is battling a thumb injury but might be back for Cork's next match, against Tipperary on 22 February.
