Owen Coyle silenced Rangers at Ibrox but can't believe gap between Motherwell wins

Owen Coyle was astonished to learn that Motherwell hadn’t won against Rangers at Ibrox in 27 years – even though he scored a double in their last victory there.

Dan Casey’s winner stunned the Premiership leaders on Saturday, adding to Theo Bair’s early opener that was cancelled out by a James Tavernier penalty.

Former Airdrie striker and Queen’s Park gaffer Coyle netted twice for the Steelmen in a 2-0 win over Rangers on May 5, 1997, and was glued to his TV in India to see if his old club could do it again.

But he was astounded to learn that Motherwell hadn’t won in Govan in nearly three decades, when he stopped a 50,000-strong conga snaking its way back to Glasgow city centre.

Coyle told the Daily Record: “I genuinely can’t believe it is 27 years!

“We all know how strong Rangers and Celtic are, but you still don’t think Motherwell would have to wait so long for a league victory at Ibrox.

“Motherwell are an established Premiership club and have finished second and third in the league, but even those teams haven’t won at Ibrox.

“When the commentator said it was 27 years since Motherwell had won at Ibrox I was really surprised.

“It just shows what a big result it was for Motherwell on Saturday – hopefully it won’t be another 27 years for somebody to emulate Dan Casey.

“If they do, then I hope then they can’t emulate me with a double, or maybe even get the hat-trick!”

Coyle spoiled Rangers’ nine-in-a-row party that day, but says Motherwell needed the win to stave off relegation, so the pressure was much higher on the class of 97.

The Chennaiyin boss said: “There wasn’t the same pressure that was on our Motherwell team, because we needed to win to stay out of the relegation play-off places.
