I got sent home in my first week with England but now want to help them win Euro 2024

If things go to plan for Phil Foden over the next few months he could be adding to his growing trophy collection with both club and country.

The Manchester City forward is in the form of his life and his sensational showings this season have propelled the 23-year-old to front and centre of Pep Guardiola's XI. He has netted 19 goals this term and starred out wide and centrally for Treble-chasing City.

It's form that means he is almost certain to start this summer's European Championship in the England team, despite the high-quality competition in forward areas. Foden completed 90 minutes just once at the World Cup in Qatar, when the Three Lions reached the quarter-finals but it's impossible to envisage him not having a pivotal role at this major tournament.

The Euros offer Foden the chance to cement himself in a conversation on the continent's very best and, to coin a cliche, arrive as a star. It's a far cry from the opening weeks of his senior international career when days after his debut in September 2020 he was sent home from the England camp for what manager Gareth Southgate called a "very serious" breach of coronavirus regulations.

Foden and Mason Greenwood breached the strict bio-bubble in Reykjavik amid allegations they had spent time with two girls during the trip. It led to the Football Association and City releasing statements and overshadowed Foden's debut 48 hours earlier. Foden apologised and was forgiven, returning to the squad in November having sat out the October internationals.
