Outrage as historic hotel confirmed to be replaced by apartments

It is out with the old and in with the new after it was decided that a new apartment block will stand in the place of a historic hotel in Denton.

The grounds of the Old Rectory Hotel off Meadow Lane have been vacant since the hotel was demolished over a decade ago. After Tameside Council’s planning panel decided to approve the latest plans, the site will become home to 18 new apartments.

More than 200 objections were lodged against the plans, the majority of which felt were not in keeping with the surroundings and would have a detrimental impact on the tranquillity of the area.

Some of those objectors headed to Guardsman Tony Downes House in Droylsden to make their feelings known to the planning panel who made their decision on the application on July 24. Despite pushing to get the plans scrapped, the decision went against them as they failed to convince the panel of councillors.

Another application that stirred up locals in Denton was to convert a residential home next to the A57 into a children’s care home. Former council leader Coun Brenda Warrington was in attendance to represent her ward members alongside a group of objectors.

However, much like the Old Rectory Hotel application, the group failed to convince the panel to reject the proposal.
