Opinion: Why Preston North End should launch bid for former Premier League shot-stopper if available on the cheap

Preston North End are a side in complete transition right now, with new boss Ryan Lowe shipping out a double digit number of players this summer and having to manage a complete squad overhaul.

Plenty have been shown the door at the end of their contracts with PNE and it has left plenty of gaps in the team to boot. One such area is in goal, where the side have been left without one first-team shot-stopping option.

It was Daniel Iversen who sat in-between the sticks for the entirety of the Championship campaign for the club this season and looked impressive in doing so. If the Lilywhites had their way, they would likely have the Leicester man back again but it seems unlikely considering the finances involved that the Dane would return to Deepdale.

With Declan Rudd having also retired from the game and with Connor Ripley and Matthew Hudson both being shown the exit, it means that Lowe will most definitely need at least two goalkeeper signings during the offseason.

It would be wise for the club to bring in a young player on a deal to challenge a more experienced and older head and it does seem as though that will be the road they go down, with the Lancashire Evening Post reporting that they intend to loan a player and sign a permanent one.

PNE though are not blessed with a hefty budget and that means they will have to be smart when it comes to recruitment this summer, especially with so many holes needing filling throughout their squad over the course of the transfer window.

One name then that the side should perhaps consider a deal for – if it is viable and cheap for the Championship outfit – is for former Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster.
