OPINION | It's unlikely that Daddy's billions can secure Nicholas Latifi's F1 seat in 2023

The Williams Formula 1 team cannot be too happy with how things currently stand. Internally, they are doing all they can to turn their fortunes around and get back to finishing in the points consistently, but they need their driver compliment to do their part.

Having been in the team since 2020, when he made his debut in the Covid-19 hit F1 season, Canadian Nicholas Latifi has been rather underwhelming.

In all three years of F1 competition, he has only managed to score seven points, all of which came in 2021: Hungary (six) and Belgium (one). Qualifying hasn't been spectacular, either. Teamed with George Russell in 2020 and 2021, he managed to out-qualify his British teammate just once - at last year's Brazilian Grand Prix.

This year, with Russell departing to Mercedes-AMG as a replacement for Valtteri Bottas, Latifi found a new teammate: ex-Red Bull and AlphaTauri driver, Alex Albon. Sadly for Latifi, he has been comprehensively outperformed by his Thai-British teammate and there seems to be no hope that Albon will let off the throttle.

Underestimating his gains

Albon joined Williams after being out of a drive in 2021. Still, the driver attended many races with Red Bull, learning as he went along.

Team boss Josh Capito said of Albon's arrival at Williams: "Alex is settling in fantastically. I think it is the best that could have happened to the team. But what I was underestimating is what he gained through having a year outside the car.

"As he worked with Red Bull, he was at most of the races, and he's seen how the interaction of the driver and team is. And then, as he was in the team, he's seen how the drivers could impact the team and how the team reacted, which is something a driver normally doesn't get.
