Opinion: Derby specialist more than deserves a new Celtic contract

Tom Rogic added to his Celtic legend at the weekend when he scored the Hoops’ first goal in the 2-1 win over Rangers. The Australian playmaker scored his sixth goal in total against the Ibrox side, and has won 11 of 17 Glasgow derby games he has played in.

The 29-year-old might not start every game for the Hoops, but when he does play he is more than capable of having an impact on a game.

It remains to be seen just how many more derbies Rogic plays in, as his contract expires at the end of season 2022-23 – which is next season. 

If you ask the majority of Celtic fans then they would want the player to be given a new contract at the club, and you have to imagine that Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou will be eager to get Rogic signed up.

Postecoglou has given Rogic a new lease of life this season, when it looked at one stage as if his time at the club was all but over.

Now under the management of his former national team boss, Rogic is a player reborn. You have to wonder though just how long a contract the player would be offered by Celtic.

As has already been said, the player is 29-years-old, and coming towards the later stages of his career. He might only be offered a one or two-year deal by the Hoops.

If that is the case though, the player will hopefully still agree to stay with the Bhoys, as he still has plenty to offer the club.

Rogic might not start every game that Celtic plays between now and the end of the season. With the likes of David Turnbull and Matt O’Riley available for selection, Ange Postecoglou might well decide to rotate his midfielders at some stage.
