Opinion: Current Celtic side can beat a record set by Hoops invincibles

One of the best Celtic teams in recent years are Brendan Rodgers’ invincibles side of season 2016-17.

That Celtic side was remarkable as it not only completed an unbeaten league season, but also won a domestic treble.

Now, the current Celtic side isn’t yet on par with that team, for a start the current Hoops side haven’t won the league yet. They also didn’t reach the Champions League group stages like the Bhoys of season 2016/17 did.

However, there is one statistic that the current Celtic side could beat the invincibles in, and that is the number of goals conceded in the Premiership.

In season 2016/17, Celtic conceded 25 goals, which is an admirable record over 38 games. As it stands, the Celtic side of season 2021/22 have conceded 19 goals after 32 games.

If Celtic concede five or less goals over the next six games then the Hoops will beat the invinicible team’s defensive record, and that is something that few would have predicted at the start of the season.

Credit for Celtic’s good defensive record has to go to the players, particularly the centre-back duo of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt, and goalkeeper Joe Hart. They have played excellently for the Hoops this season, and given the team a platform to build on going forward.

Credit also has to be given to Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou and the rest of his staff, who must have worked very hard to get the Celtic backline into shape after what was an unconvincing start to the season.

Celtic are still a work in progress at the moment, and when it comes to European performances in particular there is still work to be done by the club. But when you are talking about domestic football, the current Celtic side is performing very well, and may even be exceeding
