Opinion: Celtic star should be up for awards double at end of season
With the season ending in two months, it is time to look ahead to the end of season awards in Scottish football, and in particular, the player and young player of the year awards.
Those awards, which are voted on by the players in Scottish football, have been won by many Celtic players over the years, and there is one player in particular who should be nominated in both categories at the end of the season – Liel Abada.
The 20-year-old has had a sensational first season in Glasgow, scoring 14 goals and contributing 11 assists for the Hoops so far this season.
With Kyogo still out of action, you have to think that the winger has a real chance of finishing Celtic’s top scorer this season, and that would be a great achievement for a player that isn’t technically a striker. Abada certainly thinks like a striker though, and you often see him drift into the penalty box to score for the Bhoys.
His excellent form this season will surely have been noticed by his fellow professionals in Scotland and it will be a real shock if Abada is not up for both awards this season, and he has a real chance of winning both if he is nominated.
Abada isn’t the only Celtic player that could be nominated for an end of season award. Jota and Kyogo also have to be under consideration. Jota has been consistently good for the Hoops this season, whilst Kyogo was arguably the best player in Scotland until he suffered a hamstring injury in December.
Kyogo’s lack of playing time in the second-half of the season could count against him though, whilst Jota, at 22-years-old, could also be nominated in the young player of the year category.
