Opinion: £4m Celtic star is correct to defend his Hoops colleagues

Celtic centre-back Carl Starfelt has been defending his Hoops colleagues in the back four.

Celtic currently have the best defensive record in the Scottish Premiership, but the defence didn’t have the best of times in Europe recently, as the Bhoys conceded five goals to Bodo/Glimt over two legs.

Ahead of this evening’s Premiership game against St Mirren, the £4m summer signing from Rubin Kazan has talked up how the Celtic defence has performed this season.

“I think we are playing good. We are not giving the opposition too many chances” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“We have been playing with each other for a while now and I think we are getting very comfortable with each other. I feel like we have a lot of players in good shape as well” the centre-back stated.

It is no surprise to see Starfelt defend his teammates, as that is what players do, they will always speak up for their colleagues if they are being criticised.

The Swedish defender is correct in what he says though, as the Hoops backline has performed very well domestically this season, which is one of the main reasons why Celtic are currently at the top of the Premiership table.

When the Hoops recently dropped points against Hibernian at Easter Road the defence couldn’t be criticised, they did their bit by restricting Celtic’s opponents to few efforts on goal. It was the attack that failed to do their job as the Hoops created few chances over the 90 minutes.

If Celtic do go on to win the league this season, the part played by the defence will deserved to be recognised, as the partnership of Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers has been solid for the majority of the domestic season.

The hope has to be that the partnership will still be going strong next
