Only one in 10 people think the price of a pint is affordable

Only one person in 10 in Britain reckons that the current price of a pint in the pub is ‘affordable’. The figure has come from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), after more than 2,000 people polled on the question.

10% overall described the price of a pint as ‘very unaffordable’, with even fewer in Scotland thinking they’re paying the right amount at the bar. There, it’s just 6% of drinkers who say they’re getting a fair deal.

Meanwhile, in London 15% said that the price of a pint was affordable. It comes as the average pint in the UK has risen to £4.10, according to figures from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).

The average price of a pint of lager has risen 11.7% in just a year, a massive 47p to £4.47, while ale has gone up 8.8% in a year to £3.81. The price rises are down to costs rocketing for breweries and pubs across the board, from energy to glassware to the price of CO2 needed for pulling pints.

Brewing giant Heineken reported recently that it’s suffered a 22% drop in profits in the first six months of this year. And only this week, prime minister Rishi Sunak was heckled while attending a beer festival in West London, after the government announced a rise in alcohol duty.

London pub owner Rudi Keyser shouted at the PM: “Prime minister, oh the irony that you’re raising alcohol duty on the day that you’re pulling a pint.”

CAMRA’s National Chairman Nik Antona said: “This data shows how vital it is that government takes action this autumn and use their planned fiscal event to reassess the huge financial burden they place on the trade.
