One winner and one loser at Barnsley as club seal transfer signing

Barnsley desperately needed to add quality during the January window with the Tykes currently bottom of the Championship and looking on course for relegation to League One.

It was a frustratingly quiet window for the Yorkshire club in many ways with just two new signings arriving as they struck late window loan deals for FC Metz attacking midfielder Amine Bassi and Watford midfielder Domingos Quina.

The latter has spent the first half of the season at Fulham but has struggled for game time due to the depth of quality available to Marco Silva this term.

There should be plenty of chances to impress at Oakwell and the 22-year-old will likely be hungry to do so.

After Quina’s deadline day move to Barnsley, we’ve picked out one winner and one loser in Poya Asbaghi’s squad…

Winner: Cauley Woodrow

After three consecutive seasons of at least 15 goals for the Tykes, Cauley Woodrow’s tally is looking much thinner this season.

The Barnsley striker has scored just four times in 22 appearances this term but that he is still their top scorer in 2021/22 highlights the attacking issues that Barnsley have had.

Should Quina settle well into Asbaghi’s midfield, his energy and technical ability should help improve the relegation battlers’ offering going forward and that would be good news for Woodrow.

You’d imagine that the Yorkshire club will need the 27-year-old to start scoring if they’re to avoid the drop this term.

Loser: Josh Benson

Josh Benson joined the Tykes permanently from Burnley in July and hasn’t made the start to life at Oakwell that he will have been hoping for.

The 22-year-old has struggled to impact games since his move to the Championship and has been in and out of Asbaghi’s starting XI in recent weeks.

Benson may well
