Olympics fans stunned to learn what Indonesian athletes get if they win gold

We can imagine there's no better feeling than winning at the Olympic Games.

A gold medal is placed around your neck while the crowds cheer, before you're welcomed back to your home country as a hero. Some may even land lucrative brand deals or secure funding for their support.

But if you're from Indonesia, there's quite an unusual perk that comes with being a victor at the Olympics.

During the Tokyo games back in 2021, Indonesian badminton players Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu won the nation's only gold medal by beating China.

They were honoured by the country's government, who decided to shower them in gifts. The first was money, which isn't too unconventional. They were awarded with five billion rupiah (around £240,000).

But then the rewards got a little stranger. The island of Sulawesi, where Rahayu hails from, promised her five cows along with a house – which is udderly bonkers!

Indonesian meatball restaurant chain Baso Aci Abang provided the victors with their shopfront, while Jakarta cafe promised the winners free coffee for life.

The gifts didn't stop there – as Indonesia's Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, used his power for good. According to local news, he said the pair would be treated to a holiday at six "super priority destinations" like Lake Toba and Borobudur.

News of the prizes went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter. People were left wishing they were the ones competing for Indonesia – with one gushing: "Meatball restaurant license, iPhone, condo, wow wow."

Another admitted: "I'm more interested in the free coffee for life". And someone else wrote: "Five cows is an interesting one."
