Olympics 2024 legend Keely Hodgkinson honoured with huge new mural in the Northern Quarter

One of Team GB’s gold medal winners in the Olympics 2024 has already been honoured with a huge mural celebrating their win.

Local legend Keely Hodgkinson, from Atherton in Wigan, won gold in the women's 800m final on Monday night (August 5). Finishing with a time of 1:56:72, she was roared over the line by an army of British athletics fans at the Stade De France.

The 22-year-old, who had been tipped at the start of the Olympics as one of Team GB’s biggest medal hopes in this year’s track and field events, beat out nearest rivals Tsige Duguma, from Ethiopia, and Kenya's Mary Moraa.

It’s the second piece of street art depicting Keely to be created in Greater Manchester. In 2022, after earning a Gold medal in the European Championships and a Silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics back in 2019, a mural of the athlete was put up in her hometown of Atherton.

Painted by street artists Kelzo and Evan, the Church Street mural was created to 'inspire' youngsters in the region to take up sport and to follow their goals. Speaking of the first mural back in 2022, Keely’s mum Rachel said: "It's absolutely fantastic, Keely just feels
