Oluwatimilehin wins Fifth Janet Adowei Memorial Scrabble Championship

Current African Scrabble champion, Doko Oluwatimilehin, at the weekend beat the field to win the masters category of the Fifth Janet Adowei  Memorial Scrabble Championship, held at Chevron Recreation Club, Gbagada, Lagos.

At the championship, which featured over 200 players from across the country, Oluwatimilehin dominated the Masters category after 18 rounds of games to secure the N700,000 top prize.

Ojih David won the second spot and the N400,000 prize, while James Eweruje earned N250,000 for finishing in the third position.

Joseph Okere won the intermediate category, while Adedeji Khaleel and Ituah Sunday took the second and third spots respectively.

The Open category was won by James Eteng, who beat Isidore Emoavwoyan, and Awonusi Peter to the second and third positions respectively, while Esan Dokun won the Veterans’ category, just as Adebisi Adekansi was awarded the best female player at the championship.

Apart from the top 15 players winning various cash prizes, spot prizes were also given to players who distinguished themselves at the JAMSC championship.

Speaking after the championship, JAMSC convener and former Lekki Scrabble Club President, Ebikeme Adowei, expressed his delight that the championship he initiated five years ago to immortalise his late mother has grown to become a Nigeria Scrabble Federation’s rating championship.

“The number of participants increased this year and also the cash prize. My mission is to use the championship to promote Scrabble in Nigeria by allowing more youths to take part in the event.

“I am sure that many talents will emerge from the JAMSC championship and I thank the NSF and other sponsors for their support,” he said.
