Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2: Carl Froch says AJ shouldn't have left Rob McCracken

Carl Froch has claimed Anthony Joshua should have stuck with Rob McCracken for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk despite admitting his decision to replace him with Angel Fernandez ‘might do him good’.

The Team GB boxing coach was dumped by the British superstar earlier this year after Usyk took away his titles from him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last September.

Froch has told Betfred that his axing may turn out to be a big mistake having previously kept the faith himself despite suffering losses of his own in the past.

And the 45-year-old has now opened up further on his former trainer’s departure, revealing that he believes AJ would have benefitted from keeping McCracken.

He told Boxing Social: “Everyone’s already said it, but he’s the bigger stronger man so if he can he can use those attributes he can get the win.

“The first thing he needs to do before he gets in that ring is get his head sorted out.

“I don’t think he should have left Rob McCracken but this change might do him good because it might just reignite something and get him thinking differently – get him a little bit more aggressive.

“He needs to get his head right and start to believe in himself, otherwise it’s going to go wrong for him.”

Asked if he learnt something new from the first two press conferences, he replied: “Not really, it’s hard to take anything this early in the fight, they’re not fighting for a while.

“I just think Usyk’s extremely confident and he has every right to be because he’s extremely talented.

“AJ looks a little bit worried and he should be because he’s in against a fantastic talent.”
