Okowa commiserates with Imo over boxer’s death

Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday, commiserated with Imo State government and the family of the boxer, who slumped and died at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Asaba.

The governor described the boxer’s death as not only unfortunate, but also regrettable.

He said the speculation that the boxer suffered negligence when he started bleeding was not only false and concocted, but also a figment of imagination.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, supported by the Director-General, Delta State Bureau for Orientation, Eugene Uzum, who were at the Asaba stadium, yesterday, said frantic effort was made to save the late boxer’s life.

He disclosed that the state provided adequate facilities, including medicals, to cater for athletes, officials and spectators.

Aniagwu added that Delta, as a state, commiserates with the boxing federation, Imo State government and his immediate family.

“When his immediate family, the federation and Imo State government give approval, Delta State government will not hesitate to carry out autopsy on the late boxer to ascertain the cause of his death.”

“When he returned for another round after sustaining minor bleeding in his nose, he was still desirous of winning. When he started exhibiting suspicious behaviour, he was rushed to the mobile clinic from where he was taken in a waiting ambulance to the Asaba Specialist Hospital. At that point, bleeding may have occurred internally.”

He described speculations that the boxer was neglected, leading to his death, was not only false and concocted, but a figment of the peddlers’ imagination, insisting that ‘medical personnel were at strategic event centres for rescue operations.’
