NPFL: Gombe United pull 1-1 draw with Sunshine Stars in Akure

NPFL

Gombe United FC on Sunday forced Sunshine Stars FC of Akure to a 1-1 draw in the match day 14 encounter of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The match, played at the Ondo State Sports Complex Akure, had Sunshine Stars’ Aniete Uko putting the home team 1-0 in the 32nd minute to go into the half with the lead.

However, against the run of play, Gombe United equalised in the 71st minute with a wonderful shot from 30 yards to make it 1-1.

Efforts by the home team to secure maximum three points proved abortive as the visitors were resilient and the home team being wasteful in the face of goal.

The Head Coach of Sunshine Stars, Edith Agoye, bemoaned wasted chances of his side, especially in the first half that cost the team the maximum points.

Agoye said he would ensure that his side picked an away point in its next encounter against Akwa United to augment for the home loss.

“We played very well in the first half; we created a lot of chances, but unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances.

“Like in the game of football, when you have your advantage and you don’t take them, sometimes it comes back to hurt you. It’s so painful that we played well, we created a lot of chances but we didn’t take most of them.

“We dropped points at home, now we have to go to away game to look for it; Nigeria football today, you can win at away, you can lose at home.

“So, we are going to Eket, to give Akwa United a good fight and fight for the 3 points at stake,” he said.

The Head Coach of Gombe United, Mohammed Babaganaru, said he was happy that his team picked a point on the road after losing six points at home in the last two matches.

Babaganaru said next plan was to ensure that the team got maximum home point in their next encounter.
