Novak Djokovic snubbed after Rafael Nadal produces 'greatest comeback' at Australian Open

Rafael Nadal delivered the "best comeback in the Open era" by beating the current "best player in the world", according to seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander. Nadal came back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in Sunday's Australian Open final. The Spaniard has now won more Grand Slam titles than any male player in the history of the sport.

Nadal's triumph was just his second in Melbourne but moves him to 21 career major titles.

The 35-year-old missed the second half of 2021 due to a foot injury and revealed earlier this week he considered retiring from the sport.

But against the odds, he produced a thrilling comeback to overcome Medvedev.

Wilander dealt a huge snub to current world No 1 Novak Djokovic by claiming Medvedev was the best player in the world heading into the tournament because he won the most recent Slam.

Wilander told Eurosport: "To me this is the best comeback in the Open era. It means the most.

"Winning the 21st Grand Slam, 35 years old, being 36 when the French Open comes around, and then he beats the best player in the world you would have to call Daniil Medvedev after winning the US Open, I really do.

"Indescribable, cannot imagine where he finds that strength."

Former Austrian star Barbara Schett felt honoured to be at Rod Laver Arena to witness Nadal's victory.

Schett said: "It is unbelievable. I have never watched a match like that. It is so emotional, everybody is so emotional around.

"He's really done it, Rafael Nadal has won his 21st Grand Slam title.

"And in a way, two sets to love down, the crowd is just phenomenal here.

"Standing ovation for Rafael Nadal. It's just unreal, it's indescribable. I am so lucky to be here, to just witness this moment.
