Nottingham Forest: Shock Marinakis decision ‘will delight fans’ at City Ground

Nottingham Forest fans will be delighted with the news that manager Steve Cooper has been handed a new contract at the City Ground, although the decision does not guarantee his safety, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis handed the Welshman more than £140 million with which to strengthen his side in the summer and has once again shown his faith in the 42-year-old.

Forest were thumped 4-0 by local rivals Leicester City on Monday night to send them plummeting to the foot of the Premier League table after eight matches.

In the wake of the loss, the two-time European champions were considering a change in the dugout with Rafael Benitez lined up for the role, according to The Guardian.

It was not just the manager who looked to be in trouble as The Telegraph reported chief executive Dane Murphy and the club’s recruitment team were also set to be caught in the firing line.

That could well be because Forest’s poor start has come after signing 22 new players in the summer transfer window.

But Marinakis has put any reports of a change to bed for now by handing Cooper a new contract at the City Ground that will run until 2025.

Jones understands that supporters will be delighted with this latest news from their club after Cooper had come under the microscope.

However, the journalist adds that this does not guarantee his position for the remainder of the season and that he still needs to show a marked improvement.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I don’t think this guarantees his job for the whole season, too many defeats is always going to cost a manager, but the fans will be delighted that the board are giving him the chance to be their saviour again.”
