'Not typical' - Stefan Ortega offers update on his Man City future

Stefan Ortega played down suggestions that he could leave Manchester City with the minutes he continues to get in the team.

Ortega has shown himself to be not just an able deputy for Ederson but also a worthy replacement, with his save from Tottenham's Son Heung-min in the final moments of City's penultimate league match last season dubbed the save that won the Blues the league. After ignoring a new contract offer from the club for most of the season, Ortega penned a new deal in the summer that keeps him at the Etihad until 2026.

Pep Guardiola has publicly reiterated that Ederson is his No.1 at the Etihad, although Ortega has played in the Champions League as well as the Carabao Cup this season. The German goalkeeper has again been linked with a move away, but spoke of his happiness in Manchester as he continues to appreciate the game time he is given.

Asked about his future, he told Sky Germany: “Still in Manchester. I feel very comfortable there. At the moment there is little reason to leave Manchester again.

“I have now played 37 [36] competitive games in the last two years – that’s not a number for a typical number two. I get a lot of appreciation, even if it doesn’t always come across like that in the games.”
