‘Not one of his best performances’ - Alasdair Gold blasts ‘sloppy’ Spurs 26 y/o

Alasdair Gold delivered his verdict on the performance of midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in Tottenham Hotspur’s latest friendly against Sevilla.

The Football London journalist wasn’t impressed with Højbjerg’s performance, saying in his player ratings: “Better than his sloppy first half display but still not one of his best performances.”

Gold went onto award the midfielder with a fairly average rating of six. And, in fairness, that summed up Spurs’ game against Sevilla, with the scores ending level at 1-1.

Antonio Conte will be particularly disappointed with the result, having initially seen his side take the lead against their La Liga counterparts, courtesy of Kane’s goal. Ivan Rakitic’s second-half strike soon pegged the North London club back, however, to end the scores level.

Hojbjerg’s performance comes as a slight surprise, given that he enjoyed a solid debut campaign in North London last season, making more tackles than fellow defensive midfielder Fabinho.

Fortunately for Spurs, the disappointing performance comes in pre-season. And, with just under a month until the Premier League campaign gets underway, they have plenty of time to get back to full sharpness.

Hojbjerg will be frustrated by his performance, but he does, at least, have the chance to make improvements, before putting in a more impressive display in Spurs’ next pre-season game against Rangers on July 23.

Spurs will then face AS Roma and former manager Jose Mourinho to end their pre-season, before facing Southampton on the opening day of the Premier League campaign. Those at the club will be hoping for a campaign to remember.
