Noel Whelan says Guimaraes has ‘adjusted quickly’ to the Premier League

Bruno Guimaraes scored two goals as Newcastle United beat Leicester City 2-1 on Sunday and was praised by Noel Whelan for settling quickly in England. The 24-year-old joined on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Olympique Lyonnais in January and took little time to impress in the North-East.

He’s made 11 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, scoring three goals. And after a handful of substitute outings in the first few weeks, he’s been a regular at the heart of the midfield since. Whelan was full of praise for how well Guimaraes has done in a new country.

He told Football Insider: “It’s always great to see a player coming in from overseas and making such a massive impression. It’s great to see him have that desire to make it work at Newcastle, as well.

“He wants to be a legend, and the main man at Newcastle – and he’s certainly going about it the right way. He’s adjusting to the Premier League very quickly after a spell on the bench, and he’s really not taken long to show why they paid all that money to bring him in.

“It seems like he’s loving life at the club, and that certainly won’t hurt Newcastle’s image in the transfer market as they start making contacts this summer.” Guimaraes was linked with Arsenal before signing for Newcastle, so he was an impressive coup.

And with Kieran Trippier also making the switch mid-season, the Magpies have some pull in the transfer market now. They’re no longer in a relegation battle and have lucrative resources to match asking prices and wage demands, so Newcastle could pull off some incredible business over the summer.

Guimaraes clearly believed in the project before making the switch, so many others should follow when they see the club climbing the table.
