'No excuses' - Bolton Wanderers transfer approach outlined as obstacles in summer market removed

Bolton Wanderers intend to be picky and choosy when it comes to transfer window reinforcements this summer with any obstacles which had previously been in the club's way now gone, Ian Evatt believes.

Wanderers finished last season ninth in League One and are aiming to build on that positive result as a newly promoted team in the new campaign. The club is aiming to mount a promotion charge and target the top six at least.

The Whites are due to return for pre-season training on June 17, before jetting out to Portugal for a training camp a few days later on June 19. Wanderers boss Evatt hopes to have the squad fundamentally in place by the start of pre-season in terms of getting their transfer window business done early.

Jack Iredale became the first new addition this summer when the defender joined on a free transfer from Cambridge United. He has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the University of Bolton Stadium.

This is the first summer transfer window where Evatt has operated without an embargo prohibiting Wanderers from paying transfer fees for new players. The Whites are no longer affected either by a salary cap which came in during their 2020/21 promotion season out of League Two, but was later ditched.

Having taken Wanderers out of League Two and to a ninth placed finish in League One in two seasons in charge, Evatt believes it has been quite a journey at the club in the past two years. But now this summer, he feels Bolton can afford to focus on quality over quantity and plug gaps in the squad where needed to make them truly competitive at the top end of the division next season.
