Nicholas Griggs smashes European U20 indoor mile record

Tyrone teenager Nicholas Griggs added to his stellar reputation by breaking the European U20 Indoor mile record, when finishing a narrow second behind Andrew Coscoran at the National Indoor Athletics Live meeting in Abbotstown this evening.

Griggs, who won 3000m gold for Ireland last summer at the European U20 Championships in Tallinn, ran his first ever sub-four minute mile, posting a stunning time of 3:56:40, just 0.13 behind winner Coscoran.

In the process, Griggs has smashed the previous European U20 mark (4:02.33) set back in 2013 and is just one second outside the world record (3:55:02) set by American athlete German Fernandez in 2009.

The Mid Ulster AC runner, who turned 17 in December, made headlines last year, blazing to victory in the 3000m at the European U20 Championships in Tallinn, contributing to Ireland's superb haul of four gold medals, with Cian McPhillips and Rhasidat Adeleke (with a double) also winning in the Estonian capital.
