Nhat Nguyen produces brilliant comeback to win Irish Open
Ireland's Nhat Nguyen produced a brilliant comeback to beat French opponent Alex Lanier and win the AIG FZ Forza Irish Open.
Nguyen took the gold medal in the men's singles at the National Indoor Arena on the Sport Ireland Campus.
Having won the first game 21-13, it looked like Nguyen would be pegged back as Lanier raced into an 18-13 lead in the second game.
However, Nguyen pinched a big point following a terrific rally and that proved to be a launchpad for a stirring recovery.
A 21-19 victory sealed the match, with Nguyen throwing his T-shirt into the crowd in delight.
Nguyen moved with his family to Dublin - via Cavan - from Vietnam when he was six years old and, after taking up badminton, he became European Under-17 champion aged just 15.
He represented Ireland at the Tokyo Games, failing to progress from the group stages but picking up a significant victory over Nikula Karunaratne of Sri Lanka.
