Newcastle won’t sign Mason Mount

Newcastle United don’t have a creative midfielder and have been reliant on their chances coming from the wide-men, so Eddie Howe could be on the hunt for a playmaker this summer.

Duncan Wright of The Sun says Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is on their radar and has an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge due to Chelsea being under a transfer embargo.

The Blues aren’t permitted to hand the 23-year-old an improved contract  while Roman Abramovich remains the owner, so suitors could take advantage by handing Mount a significant payrise – he currently takes home £70k-per-week and has a £70m asking price.

Newcastle are being linked with the England international as they have the resources to blow any club out the water, but there’s no guarantee Mount would join them over Liverpool or Manchester City if offers came.

The Magpies are still at the beginning of their project and aren’t likely to consistently challenge for major honours for a number of years, so players might not pick them over Premier League giants just yet.

Howe has been ambitious in the transfer market signing Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes, but Mount might be out of reach. The 23-year-old has made 49 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 12 goals with 15 assists.

Mount still has two years remaining on his deal at Chelsea too, so the Blues aren’t even obligated to cash in this summer.
