Newcastle still interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson

Newcastle remain interested in Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson amid plans to enhance their squad next season.

Henderson, 25, intends to leave United either on loan or permanently if new manager Erik ten Hag stands by No.1 goalkeeper David de Gea and Newcastle are understood to be considering a £40million deal.

Newcastle were in discussions to sign Henderson on loan on deadline day in January but the move collapsed when incumbent first choice Martin Dubravka rejected a move to United in a proposed swap deal.

Henderson would be open to joining Newcastle and is particularly desperate for regular playing time as the World Cup starts on November 21. United are expected to sign a back-up goalkeeper if there are any notable outgoings in the department.

Sources believe it is likelier Henderson will leave on loan as he is contracted to United until 2025 and on £110,000 per week. The England international has only played three times this season and has not appeared whatsoever in the Premier League.

Newcastle spent £82.8m on signings in the January transfer window following the takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, viewed by some as sportswashing. The 1996 Premier League runners-up have comfortably avoided relegation under manager Eddie Howe, who replaced Steve Bruce in November.

Howe managed a similar profile of goalkeeper in Aaron Ramsdale at Bournemouth, who joined Arsenal in the summer and has taken Henderson's place in the England squad.
