Newcastle United verdict cast on defensive additions after Sven Botman signing

Newcastle United have been praised for their business in the transfer market after the arrival of Sven Botman. Former Premier League shot stopper Paddy Kenny believes Eddie Howe's side will be 'solid' next season as they head into the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Since January, the Magpies have signed four defenders and added a goalkeeper to their ranks. The arrivals of Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett aided last year's survival bid, with the signings of Nick Pope and Sven Botman expected to lift Newcastle to new found heights under the new ownership.

The lofty ambition to challenge for Premier League titles and Champions League honours is one for the future, but the steady approach to rebuilding the squad needs praise so far. Next season will be make or break in a number of ways.

It's the first opportunity we'll get to see Howe with a squad he'll be able to call his own and whether his side are able to sustain their impressive form in 2022 into next season. Any points on the board before December will be a huge bonus for the Magpies when comparing to last year, with avoiding another relegation battle high on the agenda.

Kenny told Football Insider: “They have done some brilliant business since January. I like Burn, you have Botman coming in as well. Trippier and Pope, for me, there are some great signings there.

“We touched on it before January, they had to tighten that defence up. They had the worst defensive record in the league.

“They had to sort it out and for me, they have done that. For me, they are going to be solid next season. It’s been great business and the owners deserve credit for that.”
