Newcastle United star Matt Targett 'wanted' in World Cup shout by Scotland

Newcastle left-back Matt Targett is on Scotland 's radar ahead of June's World Cup qualifier with Ukraine, according to a report.

Steve Clarke is facing an unusual problem as he has a left-back spot to fill in his squad with Kieran Tierney potentially out injured.

And Chronicle Live say Scotland coach John Carver took in Newcastle's victory over Crystal Palace with Targett the focus of his attentions.

In similar circumstances to Che Adams, Targett qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather and is yet to be called up by England despite previously having been watched by Gareth Southgate.

He joined the Magpies on loan from Aston Villa in January and has been a key part of their dramatic revival under Eddie Howe.

Aaron Hickey is another option available to Clarke but Targett looks a more naturally defensive fit for the left centre-back role Tierney would vacate.

Hickey may also be required to cover on the other side with Nathan Patterson also facing a race against time to face Ukraine on June 1.

Targett has played almost every Premier League game since joining Newcastle, missing only the clash with parent club Aston Villa for which he was ineligible.

The 26-year-old came through the ranks at Southampton and has made 137 Premier League appearances in total, as well as 13 caps for England Under-21s.
