Newcastle United set to complete 'brilliant' £15m Aston Villa transfer

Newcastle United have reportedly agreed a £15million fee for the permanent transfer of Matt Targett from Aston Villa.

Targett, who joined Villa in the summer of 2019 from Southampton as Dean Smith strengthened his defence upon the club’s return to the Premier League, cost around £11.5million up front and he went on to make 89 appearances in a claret and blue shirt in two and a half years as the club re-established themselves amongst the elite.

Targett signed a new contract at the back end of last season, which was due to run until the summer of 2025, but come the January transfer window he was permitted a move after Steven Gerrard secured the £25million signing of French international Lucas Digne from Everton, who’d rival him for the left-back shirt.

And have revealed that Newcastle already have an agreement in place for Targett to join permanently in the summer as he has impressed during his loan stint.

Ex-Villa attacker Frank McAvennie claims his price tag is a snip.

“I mean, wow, £15million, that’s nothing,” McAvennie told Football Insider.
