Newcastle United 'make Kalvin Phillips January priority' and more Man City transfer rumours

Newcastle United have made Kalvin Phillips their 'priority' for the January transfer window following elimination from the Champions League, according to reports.

Eddie Howe's side were dumped out of Europe at the group stage after losing 2-1 at home to AC Milan on Wednesday. Having finished bottom of Group F, they will not have any European football beyond Christmas and focus will now fully turn on retaining a top-four place.

The Magpies have been plagued by injury issues throughout the season and have also lost defensive midfielder Sandro Tonali to a 10-month ban for breaching the Italian FA's betting regulations. And now according to i News, they have identified Phillips as the man to fill the gap.

Phillips scored his first goal for Manchester City from the penalty spot in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Crvena zvezda but looks set to leave in January. Pep Guardiola apologised to the former Leeds United man after admitting he couldn't see him in the team and minutes have been limited again.

Speaking earlier this week, Howe rejected claims that Newcastle had secured a deal for the 28-year-old already. Asked whether a deal for Phillips was all but done, he said: "That's not correct."

Elsewhere, Turkish outlet A Haber (via Sport Witness) reports that Galatasaray could propose to take Sergio Gomez on loan in January.

Like Phillips, Gomez has been starved of regular football this season, playing just 255 minutes across all competitions. The 23-year-old could look to leave the Etihad in search of more regular football.
