Newcastle United Women's team made history at St James' Park this weekend in front of a bumper crowd in excess of 22,000 fans.

Hosting Alnwick Town Ladies in the FA Women's National League, Becky Langley's side put on an impressive display in front of watching co-owner Amanda Staveley, running out eventual 4-0 winners.

Goals from Katie Barker, who pulled out "a Shearer" celebration, Brooke Cochrane, Georgia Gibson and Bethany Guy helped the Magpies to an emphatic win, in a game that had to be delayed due to there being so many fans trying to get into St James' Park!

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson believes Newcastle are in "fantastic shape" following his sides 1-0 Saturday lunchtime win over the Magpies.

Liverpool overcame Eddie Howe's Newcastle thanks to a superb strike from midfielder Naby Keita, who danced his way through the United defence to slot home.

One of the players Robertson singled out for praise was Newcastle's versatile midfielder Joelinton, who started on the left wing against Liverpool.

”We worked really hard. Newcastle are in fantastic shape, they’re in the top 10 now so we knew it was going to be difficult," Robertson told the Liverpool Echo.

"Joelinton was causing us a couple of problems early on with the long balls, he was managing to win most of the headers and I thought second half the lads were excellent against him, started winning headers and that made a big difference."

Jermaine Jenas believes that Newcastle United failed to turn up against Liverpool. Speaking on Match of the Day, Jenas was responding to host Gary Lineker who called the 1-0 defeat a "bit of a reality check".
