Newcastle transfer could be bad news for Aston Villa as European ambitions outlined

Here’s the latest Aston Villa news on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

Newcastle’s imminent transfer of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes could have an impact on Aston Villa as the Ligue 1 side search for a replacement.

Villa have been heavily linked with Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur in recent days with their opening bid said to have been rejected by the Italian giants.

The club could now however face more competition for the Uruguayan in the final days of the transfer window with Lyon now said to be interested.

The French side are said to have begun discussions about a move for Bentancur, who is said to be available for about £21m this month.

It comes the same day that reports claimed that Tottenham have also asked about taking the player on loan.

Aston Villa have sanctioned a loan move for Louie Barry after the teenager returned from a disappointing spell at Ipswich Town.

The Villa man made just six appearances for the Tractor Boys in his spell at the club and returned to Bodymoor Heath earlier this month.

Barry will now join up with Swindon Town for the remainder of the season after agreeing a six-month loan spell with the League Two club.

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has said that the ‘long-term’ aim for Aston Villa is European football.

"We can probably talk a good game," the Scot said. "We have been talking about challenging for European football and competing higher up.

"It is up to us now to do the talking (on the pitch).
