Newcastle targeting Scott McTominay this summer and more Manchester United transfer rumours

Newcastle are said to be targeting Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay for a summer transfer to Tyneside.

The midfielder has been frequently linked with a move to St James’ Park, despite still having two years left on his Old Trafford deal. The 26-year-old has played 35 times under Erik ten Hag albeit has started just 16 of them.

McTominay hit the headlines in March when he netted four goals in Scotland’s two Euro 2024 qualifiers, including a brace in the 2-0 win over Spain. Despite his form for his country, the academy graduate does not feature in Ten Hag’s best XI.

And now, Football Insider claims McTominay may seek an exit this summer. Newcastle are looking to bolster their central ranks and have circled McTominay as a potential target.

Ten Hag is after a new midfielder this summer which would mean yet further reduced game time for the Scot. McTominay has made 205 first-team appearances for United, scoring 19 goals, three of which have come this season.

Meanwhile, it seems as though Jack Butland will not be returning to United at the end of his loan deal.

The Scottish Sun claims that the goalkeeper is close to signing for Rangers with his Crystal Palace contract expiring at the end of the season. The 30-year-old has failed to make his debut since signing for United in January.

He was brought in to replace Martin Dubravka, who returned to Newcastle after cutting his loan deal short. The article claims Butland held talks with Rangers last year before talks broke down but is now considered the replacement for the soon-to-depart Allan McGregor.
